GPS tracking for heavy equipment: what actually matters.
Every telematics vendor sells GPS. Very few sell GPS that a yard manager can rely on at 06:45 on a Monday. Here is the checklist that separates the two.
GPS tracking for heavy equipment has been a commodity for a decade — every OEM telemetry gateway ships with a GNSS chip. And yet the daily complaint from yard managers is unchanged: 'I can't find the machine.' The problem is rarely the chip. It is refresh rate, coverage, and the software layer that sits between the chip and the phone in someone's hand.
Refresh rate: 60 seconds or better, while moving.
A GPS ping every 15 minutes is fine for a machine parked on a yard. It is useless the moment a low-loader pulls out of the gate. Anything you would call 'real-time' should refresh every 30–60 seconds while ignition is on, and drop back to 5–10 minutes when the machine is stationary to save the battery on the gateway.
Geofencing that a yard manager can draw in 20 seconds.
Geofences are only useful if the site supervisor can draw one themselves, from a phone, without opening a ticket. Look for polygon geofences (not just circles), on-map drawing, and per-fence rules — 'alert me if this machine leaves between 18:00 and 06:00', not just 'alert me if it leaves'.
Coverage on remote sites.
Most modern gateways use LTE-M or NB-IoT with 2G fallback and buffer positions when they lose coverage. Ask the vendor what happens on a quarry with no signal for six hours: do you get a clean track when the machine drives back into coverage, or a gap? A good product will backfill; a bad one will not.
Theft recovery.
Equipment theft cost European construction roughly €1B in 2024. GPS alone will not recover a stolen excavator — a determined thief pulls the gateway inside an hour. What actually helps is a second, hidden tracker, immediate off-hours geofence alerts, and a workflow that gets a plate number to the police within 30 minutes of the alert. Make sure your software supports that workflow, not just the ping.
The three questions to ask any vendor.
- What is the position refresh rate while the machine is moving?
- Can a supervisor draw and edit geofences from a phone, without support?
- What happens to positions during a six-hour coverage gap?
If any answer is vague, keep looking. GPS is table stakes; the operational layer around it is the product.
